«Next Friday, the 5th of March, at 21h30, will take place at the Municipal Gallery of Matosinhos the prize-giving ceremony of the international competition TITAN- ILLUSTRATION IN DESIGN.
The Italian Sara Fanelli, with the book “Sometimes I Think, sometimes I Am”, is the big winner of the international competition TITAN’s first edition, collecting 8.000 Euros. Six other awards have been given, of 2.500 Euros each, to the books “P de Pai”, by the Portuguese Bernardo Carvalho, “Já não há Maçãs no Paraíso”, by the Portuguese Max Tillman, “La Grande Boucherie”, by the North-American Bouwe Van Der Molen, and “Robinson Crusoe”, by the Spanish Ajubel; to the annual reports of “Fleurop-Interflora”, by the Czech Martin Muller; and to the website “The Changers”, by the German Tim Van Den Broeck.
During the prize-giving ceremony will open the exhibition with the works in competition, which can be visited until the 21st of March.
TITAN is promoted by ESAD – Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Matosinhos, in partnership with the Matosinhos City Hall and APDL- Administração dos Portos do Douro e de Leixões.
The first edition of the TITAN competition has counted with 1039 entries of 79 countries and 2683 works submitted, a remarkable start for a competition’s first edition. Note that TITAN is not a conventional competition, since it focuses on illustration in design.
The jury, presided by Andrew Howard, Director of the ESAD’s MA in Design (Communications and Multimedia Group), is composed by well-known names of the national and international design and illustration scene, such as Adrian Shaughnessy, Paula Scher, Pep Montserrat, Jessica Helfand, Heitor Alvelos [see below].
JURY’S CONSIDERATIONS
“The original impetus for the competition comes from ESAD Matosinhos. At the core of the school’s philosophy is a belief in design as a social tool, with all the cultural resonance that this implies. TITAN is concerned not simply with illustration as a self contained practice but with the fusion of illustration and design. Our concern is to attrack work of excellence that reflects the diverse and ever expanding domain of contemporary image making. That such excellence exists we have no doubt. Through TITAN we aim to celebrate it and its authors and most importantly, to take it to a larger public.”
ANDREW HOWARD, UK/PT
President of the jury, Director of ESAD’s MA in Design (Communication and Multimedia Group), curator of the cycle of conferences “Personal Views” or of the series of exhibitions Serralves/Silo “Idioms”, and author of several books.
“I especially liked the way in which illustration now encompasses a much wider variety of media and modes of expression than it once did.”
ADRIAN SHAUGHNESSY, UK
Graphic designer, author, and co-founder of Intro magazine, and adviser of This is Real Art.
“What resonated especially for me was how stupendous the work of the illustrators can be when they are free of the constraints and expectations of clients and art directors.”
PAULA SCHER, USA
Director of Pentagram and creator of the visual identities of The Public Theater, Citibank, Tiffany’s & Co, or The New York Times Magazine.
“What struck me in particular was that the most powerful section was the book category section. It seems to demonstrate that this area is the one that brings the most freedom and space to illustrators in developing a concept and a discourse.”
PEP MONTSERRAT, ES
Illustrator, art director in the editorial field, and professor at the Arts School of Barcelona.
“We hungrily devoured the multiple offerings, pleased to see such a wealth of new ideas.”
JESSICA HELFAND, USA
Graphic designer, teacher, writer and theorist, founder of Winterhouse and of Design Observer.
“Creativity and inspiration are not such random processes after all. I believe we were able to award some of the outstanding work produced in the last few years.”
HEITOR ALVELOS, PT
Doctor in Arts and Design, Professor at the University of Porto, curator and author of several exhibitions and conferences.
