ALTERNATIVE COMICS AWARD 2026 SHORT LIST
Following the cancellation of the Angoulême International Comics Festival in December 2025, we felt it was appropriate to highlight the fanzines that had wished to compete, particularly because participation represents a significant cost for very small volunteer organizations, often located abroad. After reading and sharing our opinions in an informal and friendly manner, four fanzines stood out as particularly interesting and representative of current trends:
FENOMENA
Published by the Parisian collective Papayep (Zhang Shang and Yang Chenghua) Intimate stories on the theme of “beyond the city” that evoke a return to the land in a variety of styles using black and blue duotone. A section at the end provides an English translation for international readers.
DOPPELGANG # 3
Published by the French collective Azimut, based in Angoulême, it offers stories on the theme of urban legends by 18 authors in a format imitating old VHS video cassettes.
PIC-NIC
An annual collection published by Chinese students, it has participated in the Prize several times. Each story in Chinese is translated into English at the bottom of the page.
Special mention was also given to:
GIRLCOTT COMIX #1
A militant, 100% feminist pamphlet with the slogan “Chloé, we believe you” on the cover. Texts and drawings recount (often humorously) the context that led to the Girlcott.
Philippe Morin, Johanna Schipper, Elsa Klée et Lucile Ourvouai (FFF).
