Picture book by Travassos + audio CD

Life is a Simple Mess presents us with an imaginary journey divided into three stages: “Life is Simple”, “Life is a Mess” and “Mish-Mash” where simple and complex forms co-exist in a natural and complementary way. Along the way the texts of Nate Wooley are giving clues and Revelations for a possible interpretation of this symbiotic scenario of the real-unreal.

Can illustrations or graphics survive to the context for which they were created for? Yes, they can, as it is a wonderful example the book Life is a Simple Mess by Travassos. What we can see in these pages was originally destined by its author for record covers released by the labels Clean Feed, Shhpuma, Sunnyside and Why Play Jazz or for the promotion of the music festival Rescaldo, of which he is the programmer, but here it all gains a second existence. Without the name of a musician or a group, without a title and without the logo of a discographic company on a specific album, each piece shows itself without the rationalizing caution of an imagetic translation of the impressions provoked by music. It’s like if the images free themselves not only from its purpose but also its cause, eventually finding in its inner force their justification and their significance, even considering the inherent undefinition in the effort not to determine our individual interpretations.

Travassos’ world sums – and usually on the same visual composition – elements from several sources. One of them is a reiterated naturalist perspective, with flowers and birds protagonizing a number of visions which transforms our reality in an alien fantasy, and that simply because the act of representation always result in a recriation (a modification) of the original. Another one offers us an understanding of the human figure owing everything to comics, and prefering a pop iconography to the centuries of Beaux-Arts’ body stylizations, though treated with a formal essentialism that plays with familiarity (a house is a house is a house) and not with strangeness, in a sort of minimalist conversion of surrealism.

Music doesn’t disappear completely from this visionaryism turned autonomous. The texts on the book never refer to it, but they were written by a musician, the trumpeter and free improviser Nate Wooley, and the invitation given to him says much about it. The publication is also complemented by music on CD, with a compilation of tracks, the most part of them unreleased, of bands having Travassos as a member in his parallel activity as sound artist, like Pão, Big Bold Back Bone and Pinkdraft. In consequence, Life is a Simple Mess leaves music to return to it. In the middle of that journey, the also manipulator of electronic audio devices finds his full identity as visual artist, a necessary condition to relate himself less obviously, less literally, with music. And that’s very, very interesting.

The Clean Feed and Shhpuma labels continues to expand and evolve, allowing us to look beyond the music and deal with other the visual aspects provided inside this impressive 64 page book. Yes, there is a CD of music/sounds which is found inside this 64 page book of assorted drawings, collages and minimal texts by Nate Wooley. Sonic specialist Travassos appeared on a few recent CDs from Clean Feed stable: Pão and Big Bold Black Bone. The disc here features Travassos playing with both of these projects as well as other assorted musicians. Travassos plays tapes, amplified objects, analogue electronics and crackle box. (...)  The often mesmerizing sound of Travassos’ electronics permeates this entire disc without him ever soloing but creating a variety of haunting scenes. The book also evokes similar mysterious images which work perfectly with the music on the disc. Another triumph for the fine folks at Shhpuma  - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

Sísifo na Planície

    Inaugura no dia 21 de Janeiro, às 16h, na Tinta nos Nervos a exposição de originais de BD de André Pereira, intitulada Sísifo na Planície, que (...) reúne um significativo conjunto de pranchas originais do livro The End of Madoka Machina, que congrega, num só volume, os vários fascículos da mini-série original, juntando-lhes alguns capítulos inéditos e exclusivos para esta nova edição. 

Madoka Machina acompanha a relação amorosa de uma tríade de jovens adultos que se tenta integrar numa sociedade dominada pela tecnologia e uniformizada pelo acesso à internet. Uma visão paralela de um futuro demasiado actual, fabricada através da combinação de uma figuração antropomorfica, interrogações existencialistas e uma geometria arquitectónica dos espaços que remete para o registo virtual dos jogos electrónicos. Ao núcleo central das pranchas expostas, acrescem os esboços preparatórios e pranchas de outras histórias que, não integrando a narrativa do livro, esboçavam já as personagens que haviam de figurar na saga que agora se publica na íntegra.

A edição do MASSACRE, tem apoio da Chili Com Carne - brevemente estará disponível aqui - e será lançado oficialmente a 18 de Fevereiro, também na Tinta nos Nervos, com a presença do autor, Mao e Hetamoé, elementos do MASSACRE, e Marcos Farrajota pela Chili Com Carne.

Verruma

Verruma é uma ferramenta manual para perfurar a madeira e é também o nome adoptado por André Lemos para uma nova publicação da Opuntia Books. Neste segundo número, além de Lemos, colaboram Bruno Dias, L.L., ZMB, Lauri Mäkimurto, S.L. e Nigel McMagan.
Com uma sucessão hipnótica de desenhos, fotografias, pinturas, montagens e "found images" de diversas proveniências como filmes de baixo orçamento, cinema de terror gore, ficção científica, naves espaciais a sobrevoar a Grande Muralha da China, criaturas monstruosas pouco assustadoras, talhadas de carne vermelha e cabeças de peixe com olhos vidrados e muitas outras estranhas e exóticas. 

A ausência de qualquer tipo de texto ou contextualização, reforça o mistério e maravilhamento, numa amálgama primordial, plena de visceralidade. As técnicas gráficas e de impressão utilizadas, as montagens realizadas com diversa iconografia e temática moderna e antiga, projectam a Verruma para um tempo indeterminado, o passado sobreposto ao futuro.

Lemos e restantes colaboradores, entregam-nos um imaginário que é simultaneamente familiar e contemporâneo, mas também ancestral e primitivo, provocando um choque de estranheza e inquietação.
Uma verruma que perfura e instala no cérebro uma espécie de epifania brutalista.
Depois de todo o labor artesanal e assombro que vislumbro aqui, causa-me perplexidade porque só foram impressos 15 exemplares?!

ASTRONOMERS LOOK AT THE STARS BUT THEY ONLY SEE THEMSELVES

IT IS 1851 AND THE 18TH BRUMAIRE IS OUT. IN IT KARL MARX SAYS THAT, WHEN PUSHED FOR A MOMENT IN HISTORY, WE LOOK FOR SIGNS OF GHOSTS, AND CANNOT HELP BUT COME BACK IN TIME SEEKING THE SAME POSES, THE SAME SENTENCES, AND THE SAME IMAGES OF GRATENES. THE ALIEN BELONGS TO THE FUTURE AND IT IS THE REVERSE OF THE GHOST, A PROJECTION.  EVEN WHEN CAPILTALISM IMAGINES ITS ALIEN OUTSIDE OF IMPERIALISM AND RESOURCE EXPLOITATION, THERE IS LITTLE HOPE: THE ACTUAL IMAGE OF THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL WILL ARRIVE TO LATE. Chili Com Carne and Clube do Inferno released in 2015 QCDI #3000 is published under Chili Com Carne’s giant-sized comics anthology series QCDA. Previous issues of QCDA already showcased work of Clube's members — André Pereira in issue 1000 and Hetamoé in issue 2000. This new volume, however, is entirely dedicated to Clube do Inferno and its authors André Pereira, Astromanta, Hetamoé and Mao. As a collective, they bring an added layer of meaning to the anthology, including a subtitle to our set in the front cover: Fear of a Capitalist Planet.

As in the preceding QCDAs, QCDI #3000 is composed of four four-pages stories enclosed into different paths between the fantastic, the political and the oneiric. Dragons, policemen and misshapen pizzas populate the iconography of this project, developing an idea previously explored in our exhibition Lightning Riding Waves of Fire in El Pep (2014): that we are living in the post-catastrophe. We’ve placed ourselves as outsiders, in the future, in a parallel reality, to retrieve alien, but not alienating perspectives.

Best Graphic Novels (Portugal) by Pedro Moura in Paul Gravett site: QCDI 3000 is actually the third volume of an ongoing project to highlight new, young comics artists who are willing to push the envelope of the art of comics-making. This particular issue is concentrated on a collective called Círculo do Inferno, a little like the Hellfire Club, and they’re no gentlemen either. The authors are Astromanta, Hetamoé, Mao and André Pereira (...). This oversized, tabloid-like anthology presents four-page pieces by each artist, not necessarily narrative: Astromanta presents a sort of science fiction essay on precariousness; Hetamoé crunches shojo manga with post-Marxist politics via high fantasy tropes; André Pereira creates a seemingly light story that actually focuses on the current political-economic crises of Portuguese society (with absolutely brilliant page compositions); and Mao brings together two distinct narrative tracks, an unclear palace intrigue and the slow progress of an oozing pizza-monster (but also an exercise in experimental composition). Weird, creative, dynamic, indeterminate in their moral but surefire in their humour and politics, this collective has not only produced top-notch contemporary comics that go well beyond classic genres and forms, but also provide much food for thought, and not only about comics themselves.

Chili com Yuzin 2022

A parceria de construir "BD-cadáveres-esquisitos" entre a Chili Com Carne a a agenda cultural açoreana Yuzin continuou o ano passado. Infelizmente a especulação com o papel atingiu as ilhas e a impressão mensal das BDs foi cancelada, passando para as redes sociais da Yuzin como o Fezesbook e o Instagrana! Enfim o digital domina MAS no fim faremos um livro como aconteceu há dois anos! Yeah!!!

O ritmo destas BDs de continuação foi mensal, começando pela Mariana Pita que há dois anos teve "o azar" de ter de acabar com o caos narrativo daquela BD. Para a compensar pusemos a começar uma nova BD. Ah! Para além de cada participante ter de continuar a BD do artista anterior, ainda tem um tema especial para explorar. Eis a listagem dos artistas e respectivos "temas" para quem estiver curioso: Junho: Mariana Pita - Fotossíntese; Julho: Inês Louro - Divino;

30 anos de Stripburger com DJ Cat, Musturi e Ana Margarida Matos

2022 não foi só ano de comemoração do Mesinha de Cabeceira! Os eslovenos da Stripburger, revista de BD de referência e com quem já trabalhamos em vários projectos, também comemoram 30 anos de existência!

Mo número 80 e de comemoração, publica três artistas que já tivemos o privilégio de editar, as saber:  o japonês Harukichi - autor de DJ Cat Gosshie -  que fez a capa, o finlandês Tommi Musturi e a Ana Margarida Matos (Hoje não).
